My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.
I had been four.
Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.
Then we moved.
My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I'd suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.
Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.
And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.
The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.
But when you realize you're more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.
I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn't remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I'd find my way back.
And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.
But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I'm ready to fight for her...fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.
~ Cole Campbell
This beautiful story has definitely worked it's way up to one of my top THREE reads of 2016 so far! This book is full of curiosity, suspense and intrigue. Well, and let's not forget ... LOVE.
I truly believe that Cole is mine. No one else can have him. I call dibs! I think his character is just amazing. Tough, rough, rugged, and all alpha male. This coming from a horrible childhood where his father loathed him and took out every foul mood on little Cole. One of the best parts of the story was Cole's first meeting with Mace. My God -- another hot and smoldering alpha male.
Due to Cole's upbringing and what Mace witnessed as a neighbor from across the street, Mace took him under his wing and promised to be something Cole's father could never be ... a loving father figure. The day that Mace brought him in the house, Mia vowed to take care of him. At just 7 years old, she loved him. She knew it. She felt something for him that she couldn't explain.
For years and years and yes ... years, they loved each other from afar. Through high school and college and growing up, Cole steered clear of Mia because he knew that he was wrong for her, but was he, really? He feared that he would become the monster that was his father, so he kept his distance. He did however, stay close with Mace, even working in his garage. Cole just kept pushing Mia away, and it just tore a hole in Mia's heart. She couldn't understand why.
Tragedy then strikes. Gut wrenching, need a whole box of tissues, tears all over my kindle tragedy strikes. My God, my heart was so broken and it tore everyone to shreds. Mace and Cole were keeping Mia from harms way, via some extremely cruel and brutal men in the neighborhood, whom were planning on taking over the town. The men were determined not to allow that to happen. When this horrible accident occurred, it did not slow down the process of taking down these men. However, the main focus was to keep Mia safe. Always, keep Mia safe.
Were they successful in keeping her from harms way? Did Cole give in and let Mia in on his feelings, or did he go down the wrong path and become his father? Does Mia give up on her feelings for Cole, although she knew that she could never love another?
This book will stay with me for eons. I promise you that it will. I stayed up until all hours of the night because I didn't want to put it down. Addicting -- that's what His Light in the Dark is -- addicting. If I can recommend only one book to you this year, it would be this one. My very first L.A. Fiore book and now she has me hooked. She has me wanting more. The very end had me crying so hard that I sniffed throughout the night. Amazingly, brilliantly, wonderfully written. Please tell me that I will get more Cole and Mia?!?!
A VERY WELL deserved 5 feather rating!
“Fiore proves herself to be a fantastic writer with this book. The writing is superb. She is able to pull the reader in and never let them go. She keeps you on your toes and you never know what's around the corner. It's not very often you can read a book and go "Dang. She can write."- 5 Star Review from Avid Readers Amy Reviews
